The company farms 1,750 acres of bog in southeastern Massachusetts, making them the largest grower-owner of Ocean Spray Cranberries. Cranberries are the number one food crop for Massachusetts and their production contributes more than $200 million to the states economy.
In 2004, the company established The Makepeace Neighborhood Fund to provide support back to community groups. In the past 3 years, $580,000 has been given to local non-profits. The company also supports numerous organizations with donations to raffles and sponsorships at local events.
The company also maintains the Tihonet Village Market – a year round village store with an emphasis on locally grown & produced products, and is host to the Annual Cranberry Harvest Celebration held each Columbus Day weekend, attracting over 10,000 people.
Members of the Makepeace family and the company’s Board of Directors recruited Michael Hogan as president in January, 2004. At the time, Mr. Hogan was in his eighth year as president of MassDevelopment, the state’s economic development authority. In that role, he served as a Cabinet Officer for two Governors. Mr. Hogan served as mayor in the city of Marlborough for four years, and six as a city councilor. Under Mr. Hogan’s leadership, MassDevelopment created financing and real estate solutions that help companies to compete in the global economy. Mr. Hogan planned and managed the development of several large-scale mixed-use developments. He is a member of the Board of Directors for the Old Colony YMCA, a corporator for the Plymouth County YMCA, and a member of the Executive Board of the Associated Industries of Massachusetts.
Mr. Hogan and his wife, Margaret Dwyer, live in Marlborough and Onset with their four children.
